On This Day In...1988
Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat died of a heroin overdose at the age of 27 on this day in 1988. Internationally famous, Basquiat was a prolific painter who started his career as a teenage street artist. When his SAMO labeled graffiti caught the eye of the New York art world elite, Basquiat very quickly found fame and fortune. He dated Madonna, collaborated with Andy Warhol, starred in a movie, produced a rap single, had his own band, and was known to wear expensive designer suits while painting. Today Basquiat's work remains in high demand with his paintings regularly selling for several millions of dollars at auction.
