On This Day In...1979

Punk rocker Sid Vicious died of a heroin overdose at the age of 21 on this day in 1979.  Vicious joined the band the Sex Pistols in 1977, after original bassist Glen Matlock was kicked out of the group for "liking the Beatles" and "washing his feet."  Free of taste and hygiene, Vicious got the job despite not knowing at all how to play a bass guitar.  In concert he would perform with the group while his amplifier was turned off, and on the band's only album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols, guitarist Steve Jones recorded all of the bass parts.

It is widely believed that Sid's overdose was intentional. At the time of his death Vicious was awaiting trial for the murder of his girlfriend Nancy Spungen, who had bleed to death in the couple's Chelsea hotel room after being stabbed in the stomach. Vicious at first admitted to the stabbing, but later claimed that he couldn't remember what happened.

Key Library Checkouts:

Sid & Nancy - Chloe Webb is so unbelievably annoying as Nancy that it is actually hard to watch. This by all accounts was an accurate portrayal.

Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk - First published in 1996, this book quickly became a definitive punk text thanks to over 400 pages of endless depravity.
